NAB employees demand respect, choice and fair treatment
Dear NAB CEO Mr Andrew Irvine,
We, the undersigned NAB employees, strongly condemn your decision to cut 2500 jobs across the bank, including forcing 1500 colleagues out of their jobs by Christmas.
To be clear: your decision to push thousands of loyal employees out of NAB, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas, is one of the most callous and disrespectful actions a CEO could take. It shows a complete disregard for the people whose hard work and dedication have built NAB's success.
Your announcement has already had a devastating impact on employees across the bank, including:
- Anger and distrust: The lack of detailed information, transparency and clarity about why the bank is making these changes has left employees feeling disrespected, undervalued and betrayed.
- Anxiety, stress and uncertainty: Thousands of employees and their families are now facing an uncertain future, worried about their jobs, financial security and what comes next.
- Mental health and wellbeing: The ongoing uncertainty, combined with the relentless pace of change and proposed timelines, is contributing to growing fatigue, declining morale and serious concerns for employee wellbeing.
- Increased pressure on remaining employees: Those who remain face the prospect of heavier workloads, further job insecurity and the expectation that they will continue to deliver more with less.
Mr Irvine, you and your Executive have a duty of care to NAB employees. Your decisions have real consequences for people's lives, their families and their wellbeing. You cannot simply disregard these impacts in pursuit of cost savings.
NAB's success and multibillion-dollar profits have been built on the dedication, loyalty and contributions of its employees. We have delivered for NAB, supported our customers and adapted to constant change. We deserve better than to be treated as disposable.
Mr Irvine, we call on you to show genuine leadership by:
- Immediately pausing the job cuts process until all information about the proposed changes has been provided to employees and our union, and genuine consultation has occurred.
- Committing that no NAB employee will be forced out of their job before the end of 2026. Employees deserve genuine choice, respect and the opportunity to make informed decisions about their futures.
- Committing to work with the FSU to ensure employees' individual preferences are respected and accommodated. This means ensuring that employees who want to continue working at NAB are supported to secure ongoing roles, while those who wish to leave are offered voluntary redundancy.
NAB employees are not disposable. We deserve honesty, transparency, genuine choice and fair treatment.
We urge you to reverse course now, listen to your workforce and demonstrate the respect that NAB employees have earned. Failure to do so will only deepen the distrust and anger across the bank and make this a defining issue for your leadership and NAB's reputation.
